Having a garbage disposal in your sink can be very convenient, saving you the trouble of cleaning out debris from your sink, but there is a chance that your garbage disposal becomes a source of odor in your kitchen. To avoid this, you should make sure to use the garbage disposal properly. Anything that is fibrous, such as broccoli and similar vegetables, shouldn’t be run through the garbage disposal since the fibers can wrap around the blades and get stuck. Once the organic matter that is stuck in the blades starts to rot, you will experience the bad smells.

After running your garbage disposal, don’t stop the motor immediately. Let it run for a little while with water going through it to clean scraps off the blades. If necessary, running some ice through the garbage disposal will help clean it without damaging the blades. If you need to do any sort of cleaning inside of the garbage disposal, you should first make sure that it is completely disconnected from power.
