Gutters are (most of the time) an important addition to almost any home. A roof keeps the rain from coming into our homes, but the gutters are the part of your roofing system that moves the water to a safe distance.

To make sure your gutters are doing their job properly, here are some points to keep in mind:

  1. Be sure to clean your gutters regularly. Most homes will require this annually, but it may be more depending on how many trees you have around your home
  2. Be sure to check your gutters when it is raining. Is the water moving properly, or is it gushing over the gutters or pooling near the home?
  3. Be sure your leaders take the water far enough away from the home. A leader is the section of pipe at the bottom of the downspout. It should take the water at least three feet or more away from your home (assuming you have good drainage.

Making sure your gutters are working is an important part of being a good homeowner and giving your home the best chance possible.
