No matter where in the country we live, there is a risk that you could experience a lightning storm. There are about 50 people that die annually from lightning strikes, but the risk for property damage is much greater. If lightning hits the power grid, there is a chance that a power surge damages your appliances. There is also the risk of fire damage due to lightning strikes. Most likely, your house is protected by a lightning rod – a device that will conduct the current from a lightning strike through a wire to the ground; this however will not protect any trees or tall structures near your house from being hit. A fire that starts in a tree or something similar could spread to your home.

During a storm, you should unplug all your appliances, especially those that are sensitive, such as computers and televisions. If possible, avoid using a corded phone and stay away from your windows. Running water also poses a risk, since it could conduct lightning.
