What is a vapor barrier? In a way, you can compare it to a raincoat for your home, but it is really much more than that. Vapor barriers can consist of many different materials, be it plastic or paper, or even a paint. Their purpose is to keep water from making it into places where it shouldn’t be. If you were to install a vapor barrier, you need to be careful, since many of them are very thin, and a rip in a vapor barrier negates its purpose. There are some types of vapor barriers that are made from polyethylene plastic that are thicker to prevent them from ripping. While these cost more, they are a worthwhile investment if you are planning on installing them over a rough surface where it easily can catch and rip.
The most economical type of vapor barrier is using paint, especially if there is a surface that you were planning on painting anyway. The paint needs to cover the surface well, and if it wears off, it is very important to reapply it.
