It seems like we hear news of disasters more often than ever before. Whether it be a tornado, wildfires or snowstorms, your main concern should be the safety of yourself and your family. Sometimes, however, there will be enough time to make sure that your property is kept in as good shape as possible before conditions become too bad.

It is important to turn off your water, power and gas before any major events happen. Why is that? Because any of those utilities could do additional damage to your home if the lines were to rupture. This is especially so since you might be unable to return to your home for an extended period of time after a disaster, and this would mean that a water leak could easily flood your entire home. Gas and electricity could lead to a fire starting in your home if the lines were to be damaged.

If you do need to leave your home, you should also make sure that all doors and windows are locked to prevent looters from easy access.
