It’s hard to imagine, but whenever you run a load of laundry through your dryer, about one gallon of moisture is released from it.

All this moisture travels out through your dryer’s vent, and this is why it is important that your dryer exhaust is properly set up.

The most important thing is that your exhaust vents outdoors. If it were to be exhausted inside of your home, all that moisture would greatly increase the potential for damage, such as mold. The vent should also be at least 3 feet away from any windows or doors, and at least 10 feet from an air conditioner.

If at all possible, your duct should be straight, horizontal and not too long. This will minimize the risk of lint buildup in the duct, as well as allow your dryer to run more efficiently.

The duct should be terminated with a damper to prevent backdraft.
